Restorative Justice: Deep Roots, Many Branches
A 6 part TV series in development
Restorative Justice works towards forgiveness and healing the hurt.
It gives a philosophical framework for an alternative to the current, punitive criminal justice system. Restorative Justice initiatives are focused on the harm that has occurred and is centered on the victim - it also supports offender accountability and restitution.
The series will document Restorative Justice in practice from those who are involved in experiencing it. The stories come from victims, offenders, police, defence counsel, judges and community members. They illustrate the healing power of accountability, repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation and reintegration.
Some of the initiatives which we have thus far recorded are Family Group Conferences, victim/offender mediation, circle sentencing, and an inmaterun Restorative Justice Coalition within a federal institution.
The series will provide information and education about this rediscovered concept of justice and show how it is growing in Canada and internationally..
