A curriculum like no other
A series of 4 educational programs and a 1hr broadcast production about the creation, content and result of the First Nations Generative Curriculum Partnership Programs.
"We must rediscover our traditional values - of caring, sharing and living in harmony - and bring them into our daily lives and practices."
Ray Ahenakew Executive Director Meadow Lake Tribal Council
"We developed the educational framework they decided they needed most. The UVic School of Child and Youth Care contributes to the project, but does not define it."
Dr. Alan Pence MLTC/SCYC Project Leader.
In 1989 when Ray Ahenakew, Executive Director of Meadow Lake Tribal Council, met with Dr. Alan Pence from the UVic School of Child and Youth Care, the First Nations Partnership Program was born.
UVic School of Child and Youth care works as partners, initially with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, to train First Nations child care workers. A two year university level program for students plus a short term workshop for family daycare providers was created and is proving very successfull. It blends knowledge from the mainstream N.American culture with traditional knowledge of the First Nations people. The whole process is community based - meaning that students can work together in their home settings.
Gumboot Productions is contracted by the First Nations Partnership Programs to document the process of the training from 4 perspectives, and to create a broadcast documentary about the framework and achievements of this innovative educational initiative.
Status:
- Documentary productions completed and in distribution
