Penny Joy - director TO HEAR HER NAME grew from the experiences of women in Vancouver, British Columbia, who were compelled to respond to the suffering of women and children in the wartorn former Yugoslavia. Through contacting women's groups in Zagreb, Croatia they discover the need for training in trauma counselling.
A psychotherapist travels to Sarajevo and other war zones. In Zagreb, two Canadian women therapists empower remarkable groups of women that support refugees from Bosnia - many of the support women are refugees themselves. It is the first time that post traumatic stress has been addressed while a war is still going on.
In Vancouver, other women sponsor Bosnian refugees into Canada. The journey of two from Sarajevo ends in Vancouver where they recall their past experience and deliver a heartfelt message to women everywhere.
A half-hour documentary film..
"....what we encountered in Zagreb, on our visit to some of the grassroots support initiatives for women refugees, was the quiet courage and dignity of those survivors. Many of the women, despite the traumas they had undergone, expressed their intent "not to continue the hate". That commitment, and the work of the women from Canada that we filmed, contributed to making TO HEAR HER NAME a document of hope ."
