Deryk Houston calls for participants in a worldwide Art Project

Deryk working on a ground art project in Iraq

This is a call for creatively minded people: Please join me in the creation of the following art project. Every effort will be made to see that each person's creation is included in an art book that looks at the rights of the child.
I would also encourage submissions of a few thoughts or words on children's rights that might also accompany the photos in the art book.

As you can see from my web page, I am a Canadian artist and I completed an art project in Iraq in April 1999. It was a line drawing of a child. The primitive and simple image was formed using small stones laid on the ground. I dedicated this ground art to the Iraqi children in support of their rights which are guaranteed under international law.

I would like to put out a call to all creatively minded people around the world, including children, to join me in creating a similar ground art project in their part of the world, in support of the children around the world.

Each person involved would design their own image and lay it out themselves. I ask that the image be of a mother and child. It should be kept simple and be as large as possible so that it shows well from the air. Perhaps a hundred feet by a hundred feet or larger. Smaller projects would not be ruled out.

I will also do my very best to see that each and every image is included in a future art book that looks at children's rights through the eyes of the people and not through the eyes of their governments.

For your project, you might wish to use stones in piles to form the lines as I did in Iraq. Or perhaps you will dig a deep line into the ground to form your image. Someone else might plant a thick line of tulips to form their drawing on the ground and watch it re appear every spring. Some might plant a bed of flowers in a field where children, mothers and dads could walk around together and sense the image together. Or it might just be a dry line of stones out in the wilderness somewhere. I could even see a beautiful image formed by having small children stand or sit in position to form the shape of the mother and child image.

Whatever you decide, use your imagination.

I laid out my design on the ground in Baghdad in a couple of days so it doesn't need to be a huge investment of your time.

I would like to see the designs complete before the end of the year if possible. Once your project is complete, have it photographed in good light and contact your local media people. Use it as a focus for discussing your feelings regarding children's rights and possibly mention the sanctions in Iraq.

If you are Canadian, you might wish to mention that The Honorable Lloyd Axworthy has supported the sanctions on Iraq. Several hundred thousand children have died as a direct result of sanctions in Iraq according to UNICEF and other independent groups. Madeleine Albright has said that she thinks that the price has been worth it.

Please forward this information to anyone you think might be interested in creating such an image. I encourage everyone, not just "artists".

I especially encourage children .
