Windows 95 Setup

If you are unsure of which steps to take to set up your Windows 95 software for use with Pacific Interconnect, follow all of the steps in this document. Please do not be nervous about the size of this document. You will find the instructions are easy to follow as long as you take them step by step.

To properly use this document, you will need to know a few things:

  1. Your userid (e.g. jsmith)
  2. Your Password (e.g. doggy75)

Installing TCP/IP and the Dial-Up Adapter

  1. Click on the START menu, select "settings", then click on "Control Panel".
  2. Double-click on "Network".
  3. Check to see if "Dial-up Adapter" is installed. If it is not, follow these steps:
    • Click the "Add" button.
    • Double-click "Adapter".
    • Click "Microsoft" in the Manufacturer box.
    • Click "Dial-Up Adapter" in the Network Adapters box.
    • Click "OK".
  4. Check to see if "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter" is installed in the network components box. If it is not, follow these steps:
    • Click the "Add" button.
    • Double-click "Protocol".
    • In the Manufacturer box, click "Microsoft".
    • In the Network Protocols box, click "TCP/IP".
    • Click "OK".
  5. Check to see if "Client for Microsoft Networks" is installed. If not follow these steps:
    • Click the "Add" button.
    • Double-click "Client".
    • In the Manufacturer box, click "Microsoft".
    • In the Network Clients box, click "Client for Microsoft Networks".
    • Click "OK".
    • Click on the "Identification" tab.
    • Fill in "Computer Name" with a name for your computer. Use your userid if unsure of what to use.
    • Fill in "Workgroup" with a name for your network (if you have one). Use "workgroup" if unsure.
    • Click on the "Configuration" tab to go back to the network settings.
  6. Click on "Dial-Up Adapter" then click on the "Properties" button:
    • Click on the "Bindings" tab. The only item with a check mark in it should be "TCP/IP" if any other items are checked, uncheck them.
    • Click "OK".
  7. Click on "TCP/IP" then click on the "Properties" button:
    • Click on the "WINS configuration" tab. Change the setting there to "Disable WINS Resolution".
    • Click on the "Bindings" tab. Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" is checked.
    • Click on the "DNS Configuration" tab.
      • Set it to Enable DNS.
      • Fill in "Host" with your userid.
      • Type pinc.com in "Domain".
      • In the DNS server search order section, click in the box with 3 dots in it and type: "199.60.118.2".
      • Click on "ADD".
    • Click on "OK".
  8. Click on "OK".
  9. You will be asked to restart your computer. Choose "YES".


Setting up the Windows 95 Networking Software for Use with Pacific Interconnect

Once you have setup the Dial-up Adapter, use the following steps to create a connect icon for Pacific Interconnect:
  1. Double-click on "My Computer". If "Dial-Up Networking" is there. Go to step 2. Otherwise follow these steps:
    • Double-click on "Control Panel".
    • Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs".
    • Click on the "Windows Setup" tab.
    • Click on "Communications" (The word, not the check box)
    • Click on "Details...".
    • Put a check in the check box for "Dial-Up Networking".
    • Click "OK".
    • Click "OK" again.
    • Files will begin to copy. (You may be asked for your Windows 95 CD or disks)
    • You may be asked to restart Windows. Choose "YES".
    • Once windows is restarted, start at step 1 in this section again.
  2. If this is the first time you have been here, the Make New Connection Wizard will appear. If it doesn't double-click Make New Connection.
  3. Proceed through the Make New Connection Wizard to create the connect icon. You will need to know the phone number for Pacific Interconnect (744-2788 in Victoria, 687-2333 in Vancouver).
  4. Use the right mouse button to click the new connect icon (you probably called it Pacific Interconnect), then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  5. Unless you happen to be dialing in long distance, uncheck "Use country code and area code".
  6. Click Server Type.
    • In the Advanced Options area, uncheck "Log onto Network".
    • In the Allowed Network Protocols area, uncheck the "NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible" check boxes.
  7. Click TCP/IP settings.
  8. Click Server Assigned IP Address. Should already be set that way.
  9. Click Specify Name Server Address and type 199.60.118.2 in Primary DNS. Leave Secondary DNS and both WINS servers set to 0.0.0.0
  10. Make sure "Use IP Header Compression" and "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network" are both checked.
  11. Click "OK" to exit TCP/IP settings. Click "OK" to exit Server Type Settings. Click "OK" to exit Pacific Interconnect Properties.
  12. You are now set up. To log on to the Internet, Double-click on the Pacific Interconnect icon in "Dial-Up Networking".
  13. In the User name field, type your Pacific Interconnect Userid and add ".ppp" after it to invoke the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) (eg jsmith.ppp).
  14. In the Password field, type your Pacific Interconnect password. If you want your password remembered for each future session, check the "Save Password" box.
