Configure Windows 3.1

Configuring Trumpet Winsock is quite straightforward. There are only a few things to check to make sure that they are set up correctly.

  1. Under the File menu, bring up PPP Options....
    • Make sure that it is unchecked and the fields are blank.
    Click 'OK'.

  2. Under the File menu, select Setup. There are a few things here to check, as outlined in the graphic below.

    • The Name server and Domain Suffix should already be filled in with the correct numbers:
      coastnet.com and 206.87.35.216

    • You should have Internal PPP checked.

    • Your SLIP Port should be set to the port that your modem is on.
If you aren't sure, choose 2.
See below on how to determine which com port your modem is on.

    • Baud rate should be set to 38,400 if you have a 14,400 kbps modem, or 57,600 if you have a faster modem.

    • Hardware Handshake should be on.

    • Van Jacobson CSLIP compression should be off.

    • Online Status Detection should be on DSR check.
That's it. Click OK and then you will have to exit Trumpet and restart it for the changes to take effect.

Finding the Right COM Port

Your modem resides on a COM port inside your computer, and trumpet looks to that com port to talk to the modem (trumpet calls this the SLIP Port). Finding it (if you don't know where it is and trying com 2 didn't work) is a simple process of trial-and-error.
Choose a com port and then see if it works, and if not, try the next one.

  1. Choose Setup from the File menu.
  2. Start with SLIP Port set to 2.
  3. Click OK and then exit and restart trumpet.
If you have found the right port where your modem is, you should see the following on the trumpet screen:
Trumpet Winsock Version 2.0 Revision B
    	Copyright (c) 1993,1994 by Peter R. Tattam
    	All Rights Reserved.
THIS IS AN UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION FOR EVALUATION ONLY.
    	PPP ENABLED
Internal SLIP driver COM2 Baud rate = 19200 Hardware handshaking
    	IP buffers = 32
    	My IP = 204.174.113.42 netmask = 255.255.255.0 gateway = 204.174.113.252

The important line is the 6th, where it says

Internal SLIP driver COM2 Baud rate

etc. If your modem isn't on the slip port you selected then the 6th line will say something like:

Unable to open COM2 - Hardware is not available

and you can go back to step # and try com 3, then 4, then finally try 1. We don't start with com 1 as the mouse is usually installed there.
