Configure FreePPP 2.5
These settings will also apply to any of the versions of FreePPP that
appear similar to these screen shots. There are some subtle but
unimportant differences in where some of the settings are entered, but the
settings that go into these places remain the same.
To get started, you need to open the FreePPP Setup. You can do this either
from the FreePPP menu that is usually up at the top of you menu bar just
to the right of the clock. It looks like a little telephone with half of a
green globe behind it. If that isn't there, simply go to the Apple
Menu/Control Panels/FreePPP Setup.
You should now see the screen below. If you only see half of it, then
click on the little triangle to the left of 'From:', which has a red circle
around it in this picture.
- We suggest that you keep the two check-boxes checked, 'Allow
applications to open connection', which will allow Netscape, Eudora and
others to automatically dial in for you when you launch them, and 'Show
alerts during connect and disconnect' just to keep you informed of
what's going on.
The 'Connect to:' is where you can select which service that you dial
into, for people that may dial into both Coastnet and Pacific Interconnect
or others. All you need to do is set up another 'Account', which we will
get to shortly.
Now click on 'Modem Setup...'
- You should now see the following:

- Your settings should match those in the picture, with the
exception if you have your modem plugged into the printer port, or are
using a laptop, in which case you may have 'Upper/Lower PC card slot'
selected. If you are using a Performa computer, you may also have a few
other boxes checked that relate specifically to the Performa's modem
setup.
- Click on OK and then click on the 'Accounts' tab.

- If you don't have the name of our server listed (ie Coastnet) then
simply click on 'New...' and you'll see the next screen.
If your server name is listed, then click on it once to highlight it,
and then click on Edit...

- Fill in the 'Server Name:' with Coastnet
or the name of your account provider.
- Fill in the phone number with:
If you have Call Waiting (a beep in your ear when
someone calls and you are already on the phone), then put
70#, in front of the phone number (make sure you include
the comma). This will disable your call waiting on a per-call
basis. The beeps can cause your modem to lose its
connection.
- Make sure the 'User Name:' and 'Password:' fields are
left blank, and set the 'Connect:' to 'Using Connection
Script', and then click on 'Edit Connection Script'.
Your connection script should look something like this:

- For <username>, put in your username, which was what
you choose when you signed up for the account. This is the first part
of your email address, so if you are jdoe@coastnet.com, then
your username is jdoe.
- Enter your password in the 4th line.
Remember that all of this must be in lower case (NO
capitals) and there musn't be any punctuation (no quotes, no '<'s, or
any such things).
- Click OK and then click on the Connection tab.
- You'll now see this:

For users with 14.4 modems, set the Port Speed: to 38,400,
and for 28.8 or 33.6 modems, set it to 57,600.
Set the Flow Control: to CTS only.
Unless you have a specific modem initialisation string, leave it set to
atz. For more information on initialisation strings, see the topic
list at the top of this document.
- Click OK and then click on the Options tab

The information in the Domain Name, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS are not currently used
in this version of FreePPP, so ignore them.
The important thing is to make sure that Assigned by PPP server is
the selected option, or else you won't be able to connect and surf
properly.
- Click OK and then Click on the Locations tab.
This is where you can set the FreePPP to have different configurations
for dialing, in the case where you may travel and use a calling card to
dial long distance to check your email.

For most users, the default settings are fine for dialing in from home,
and should not be changed. To see the default settings, click on the
Edit... button with Home selected.

- Now click on OK and then the General tab, and you've
finished the setup. For clarity's sake, you may wish to click on the
small triangle next to the From: again to shrink the connection
window down to the essentials.
You can then click the 'Go-Away box' in the upper left-hand corner of the
FreePPP Setup window.
You have now succesfully configured FreePPP, and can dial
into the Internet!
