Configure FreePPP 2.6.x |
|
These settings apply to any of the versions of FreePPP over 2.6.
To get started, you need to open the FreePPP Setup. You can do this either
from the FreePPP menu that is usually up at the top of you menu bar just to
the right of the clock. It looks like a little blue telephone.

If that isn't there, simply go to the Apple Menu/Control Panels/FreePPP
Setup.
You should now see the screen below. If you only see half of it, then
click on the little triangle to the left of 'Using:', which has a red circle
around it in this picture.
- We suggest that you keep the two check-boxes checked, 'Allow
applications to open connection', which will allow Netscape, Eudora and
others to automatically dial in for you when you launch them, and 'Show
alerts during connect and disconnect' just to keep you informed of
what's going on.
The 'Connect to:' is where you can select which service that you dial
into, for people that may dial into both Coastnet and Pacific Interconnect
or others. The 'From:' is where you are dialing from, which would be set
to 'Home' normally, and the 'Using:' can be set to your particular modem
type.
- Click on the 'Accounts' tab.

- If you don't have the name of our server listed (ie Coastnet) then
simply click on 'New...' and you'll see the next screen.
If your account name is listed, then click on it once to highlight it,
and then click on Edit...

- Fill in the 'Account Name:' with Coastnet
or the name of your account provider if it's not already filled in.
Set Connect to 'Directly' and fill in your username and password
respectively and remember that they must be typed lower-case
(no capitals!).
- Click on the Dialup tab.
- You'll now see this:

Put in the area code (250) and the phone number:
If you have Call Waiting (a beep in your ear when
someone calls and you are already on the phone), then put
70#, in front of the phone number (make sure you include
the comma). This will disable your call waiting on a per-call
basis. The beeps can cause your modem to lose its
connection.
- Click on the Options tab

Fill in the fields according to the table:
| Domain Name: |
Primary DNS: |
Secondary DNS: |
| Coastnet |
206.87.35.216 |
199.60.118.2 |
We recommend that you leave Configure OT TCP/IP for this Account
checked, as then you skip a step of setting up the TCP/IP separately.
Make sure that Assigned by PPP server
is the selected option, or else you won't be able to connect and surf
properly.
- Click OK and then Click on the Locations tab.
This is where you can set the FreePPP to have different configurations
for dialing, in the case where you may travel and use a calling card to
dial long distance to check your email.

For most users, the default settings are fine for dialing in from home,
and should not be changed. To see the default settings, click on the
Edit... button with Home selected.

- Click on the OKand then click on the Modem tab and
double-click the modem setting that shows up in the list.

Your settings should be close to these.
If your modem is plugged into the printer port, or you are
using a laptop, then you may have 'Upper/Lower PC card slot'
selected. If you are using a Performa computer, you may also have a few
other boxes checked that relate specifically to the Performa's modem
setup.
You can change the Modem Config Name to be whatever you like,
perhaps either the name of your modem, or something that will make sense
to you. In general, you will only ever have one modem, so it won't really
matter what you call it.
For users with 14.4 modems, set the Port Speed: to 38,400,
and for 28.8 or 33.6 modems, set it to 57,600. For 56k users, set
it to 115,200.
Set the Flow Control: to CTS only.
Unless you have a specific modem initialisation
string, leave it set to atz. For more information on
initialisation strings, see the topic list at the top of this document
under 'Macintosh Init Strings'.
- Now click on OK and then the General tab, and you've
finished the setup. For clarity's sake, you may wish to click on the
small triangle next to the From: again to shrink the connection
window down to the essentials.
You can then click the 'Go-Away box' in the upper left-hand corner of the
FreePPP Setup window.
You have now succesfully configured FreePPP, and can dial
into the Internet!
To disconnect, you can either open up the FreePPP setup and click on
'Disconnect', or simply go under the FreePPP menu (blue phone in the upper
right hand corner of the screen) and select 'Close PPP Connection'.
