Configuring MacTCP

Important Note: Users of System 7.5.3 and greater should be using OpenTransport. Please see the 'Configuring Open Transport' topic.
If you are unsure of what system version you are using, go to 'About this Computer...' under the Apple Menu, and see 'System Software 7.x.x'.

  1. From the Apple Menu/Control Panels, select MacTCP.

  2. Make sure that you have one (and only one) PPP or FreePPP icon in the window. If there is more than one, go into the System Folder/Extensions and remove the oldest PPP extension (use File/Get Info to find out version/date information). Make sure that PPP is highlited (click on it) and then click on 'More'.

  3. You should get a window such as in the picture.

    [MacTCP]

There are 3 things of importance (ignore the rest):

    • Obtain address by server
    • Class C
    • The Domain Name Server Information

  4. For Coastnet users, set Name to 'coastnet.com' and Address to '206.87.35.216'.
  5. In any case, make sure that Default has a 'dot' in it next to the first line of boxes. There should only be two rows of boxes, the first with the information above, and the second row should be empty (no '.''s or anything else).

  6. That's it. Click 'OK' and then close the MacTCP window.

  7. You will have to restart before these changes take effect.

Configuring MacPPP (ConfigPPP)

[ConfigPPP]
  1. From the Apple Menu/Control Panels, select ConfigPPP.
    • Select the 'Port Name:'; usually the modem port.
    • Set the 'Idle Timeout' to None.
    • Set the 'Echo Interval' to 2 seconds.
    • No check in 'Disable Auto Connect'
    • No check in 'Terminal Window'
    • Check in 'Hangup on Close'
    • Check in 'Quiet Mode'
    • Set the PPP Server to Coastnet. If you don't have either of these options to choose from, then click on 'New...', type the name in the 'PPP Server Name:' box, and click 'OK'.

  2. Click on 'Config...'

    [ConfigPPP2]

    • Set the 'Port Speed' to 38400 for 14.4 modems, and 57600 for 28.8 or faster modems.
Note: This is the speed that the computer talks with your modem, not how fast your modem talks with our modems. Too fast a speed can confuse the modem and cause problems.

    • Set the 'Flow Control:' to CTS only.

    • Leave the selection on 'Tone Dial' unless you really have a pulse (rotary) dial telelphone line. This is unlikely...

    • Phone number is:
      • Coastnet: 744-4248

If you have Call Waiting (a beep in your ear when someone calls and you are already on the phone), then put 70#, in front of the phone number (make sure you include the comma). This will disable your call waiting on a per-call basis. The beeps can cause your modem to lose its connection.

    • Set your 'Modem Init' to 'atz'. This is the initialisation string that gets sent to the modem. You can find other strings in the topics section at the top of this page.

    • Leave the 'Modem connect timeout:' at 90 seconds.

  3. Click on 'Connect Script...' and fill in as follows:

    [Connection
	Script]

  4. For '<username>', put in your username, which was what you choose when you signed up for the account. This is the first part of your email address, so if you are jdoe@coastnet.com, then your username is jdoe.
  5. Enter your password in the 4th line.
    • Remember that all of this must be in lower case (NO capitals) and there musn't be any punctuation (no quotes, no '<'s, or any such things).
  6. Click 'OK', then 'Done', and then close the ConfigPPP window.

You have now finished setting up the MacTCP and ConfigPPP and should be ready to dial in to the internet.
