Configuring your Mac
This is a fairly broad topic considering the number of options available to
the Macintosh community for connecting to the internet. It breaks down
into roughly three things that one needs:
- MacTCP or Open Transport TCP/IP
- ConfigPPP, PPP Setup (FreePPP) or OT/PPP
- A PPP extension
MacTCP or Open Transport (TCP/IP)
Users who are using older Macs or any operating system version less then
7.5.3 should be using MacTCP. Users with 7.5.3, 7.5.5 or anything greater
should be using Open Transport, and in general these systems will not work
with anything else. (To find your version of the MacOS, go to the Apple
menu and select 'About This Computer...' and look for 'System Software
7.x.x').
For setting up MacTCP, see Configuring
MacTCP.
Open Transport users (TCP/IP), please see Configuring OpenTransport.
ConfigPPP and others
These Control Panels are where your Mac looks for all the information it
needs to dial up and connect to our modems. Any of the software here will
work with both Classic Networking (MacTCP) and Open Transport.
These control panels are where you set your modem setup, connection script,
dial-in phone numbers and other pertinent information. The PPP extension is
always installed along with the control panel, and has no set-up associated
with it.
For configuring these, please see the set-up pages:
