56k/V.90 Information
Welcome to the CoastNet 56K pages. Here we try to keep you up to date on
the happenings of 56k on CoastNet and some places to find more information.
As most newer computers and 56k modems are being released with the correct
firmware version, we no longer require you to check the version number.
If you have a fairly new modem then you will be able to connect to
CoastNet at higher than 28,800 speeds.

Here's what will work properly.
Windows:
- You must have a 56Kbps speed modem which supports either the 56 KFlex or the V.90 standard.
Plus an appropriate firmware upgrade of version 1.0 or higher. (Windows95)
Most firmware upgrades are avaiable from the various modem manufacturers
websites. eg. http://www.globalvillage.com/
Some qualifying modem types include: Zoom, Hayes, Motorola, Global Village
and Supra, among others. Yes, 33,600 modems are included will notice a speed
increase to 31,200 or 33,600.

Macintosh:
- MacOS8 with Open Transport 1.1 (TCP/IP) or higher and Open Transport PPP or
FreePPP 2.5V2 or higher only. Some versions of ConfigPPP may work fine,
but we cannot offer a list of versions as we cannot possibly test them all.
- Mac users using OT/PPP must also have the latest "CCL script" for Open
transport PPP. These scripts are available from the various manufacturers
websites. eg http://www.globalvillage.com/ Get it first. Some qualifying
modem types include: Hayes, Motorola, Global Village and Supra, among
others.
- Yes. 33,600 modems are included and will see some marginal speed increase.
